As the countdown to Durga Puja commences, craftsmen throughout Bengaluru are adding the final touches to the intricate decorations and idols that will embellish the city’s pandals. In the bustling workshops of Jayamahal, Cox Town, Maruti Seva Nagar, and other areas of the city, a mix of traditional methods and contemporary designs is being employed to create stunning works of art that bring Durga Puja to life. These skilled artisans are incorporating traditional techniques passed down through generations alongside modern innovations to craft masterpieces that showcase intricate details, vibrant hues, and symbolic significance. The trend of theme-based idols and modern designs, some incorporating clothing into the clay designs, is gaining popularity in the city. Artisan Chandrashekhar Pal noted the increasing demand for larger idols ranging from 6 to 15 feet high. While the artisans find it disheartening when their hard work goes unnoticed, they take satisfaction in knowing that their art is utilized for religious purposes and thankful for the income it provides for themselves and their teams. The celebrations are expanding, with a growing demand for idols driven by an influx of Bengalis moving to the city. One artisan, who has been creating idols for Durga Puja in Bengaluru for the past 35 years, mentioned the rise in demand, now producing around 60 idols compared to just a few in the past. He expressed that while Karnataka also observes Dussehra with similar rituals, the notable difference is the celebration of Durga Puja by Bengalis beginning on Panchami.
